Decile: All 32,844 LSOAs in England are ranked and divided into 10 equal groups. Decile 1 represents the most deprived 10% of areas nationally; decile 10 the least deprived 10%.

Rank: The position of this LSOA out of 32,844. Rank 1 is the most deprived area in England.

Score: A weighted combination of seven deprivation domains (income, employment, education, health, crime, housing barriers, living environment). Higher scores indicate greater deprivation.

What each component measures

EPC Rating (E/F/G %)
The percentage of properties in this area with an Energy Performance Certificate rating of E, F or G — the three worst efficiency bands. A higher score means more homes with poor energy efficiency.
Income Deprivation
From the IMD 2025 Income domain. Measures the proportion of the population experiencing low income. Based on the national decile ranking where decile 1 = the most income-deprived 10% of areas in England.
Energy Consumption
Average domestic energy consumption per property, percentile-ranked across all Staffordshire LSOAs. Higher consumption suggests less efficient homes or greater heating demand.
Off-Gas Properties
The percentage of properties without a mains gas connection, based on EPC certificate data. Off-gas homes typically rely on more expensive fuels such as oil, LPG or electric heating.
Energy Cost Burden
Estimated annual household energy cost (gas + electricity at current Ofgem price cap rates), weighted by income deprivation. Areas where residents face high energy bills relative to low incomes score highest. Uses DESNZ metered consumption data and the Q4 2025 price cap.
Property Age
Average construction year of properties in this area, percentile-ranked across Staffordshire. Older housing stock tends to have poorer insulation and lower energy efficiency.
Crime
From the IMD 2025 Crime domain. Measures the risk of personal and material victimisation at a local level, including violence, burglary, theft and criminal damage.
Health
From the IMD 2025 Health Deprivation and Disability domain. Measures the risk of premature death and impairment of quality of life through poor physical or mental health.
Education
From the IMD 2025 Education, Skills and Training domain. Captures the lack of attainment and skills in the local population, covering both children/young people and adult skills.
IDACI (Children)
Income Deprivation Affecting Children Index. Measures the proportion of children aged 0–15 living in income-deprived families. A supplementary index from the IMD 2025.
IDAOPI (Older People)
Income Deprivation Affecting Older People Index. Measures the proportion of adults aged 60 and over living in income-deprived households. A supplementary index from the IMD 2025.

All IMD-based components use the formula: score = (11 − decile) × 10, converting the national decile (1–10) to a 0–100 scale where higher = greater deprivation. EPC and off-gas scores use the raw percentage directly. Energy consumption and property age are percentile-ranked across Staffordshire. Full methodology →
